Recipient Mare Program
HVS possesses a herd of young recipient (surrogate) mares primarily to service our embryo transfer program. Occasionally – if numbers permit – some of the mares may be available for ICSI embryos. Mares are regularly teased and monitored by ultrasound. These mares are leased to clients and are returned after weaning foals.
Embryo Transfer
In the event that a mare is unable to carry their own pregnancy, embryo transfer allows the pregnancy to be carried by a surrogate (recipient) mare. This advanced reproduction technique can be used to effectively deal with infertility issues, or to allow mares to have multiple offspring in one season.
