Sports Medicine & Lameness
Equine embryo transfer is the process where a mare is bred, and then flushed 7-8 days later in hopes of retrieving an embryo. If an embryo is flushed out, it is transferred to a recipient (surrogate) mare that was synchronized to the donor mare’s cycle. This is a great option for older mares and performance mares that are unable to take time off from showing or training. Embryo transfer also gives the possibility of having multiple offspring from a mare in one season.
HVDS embryo Transfer is available from the donor mare into the selected recipient mare as well as from Embryo Freezing, where we are able to harvest live embryos and freeze them for safe storage until the desired time to place them into a recipient mare.
Lameness Exams
In depth lameness evaluations are routinely performed at the clinic. The cause of lameness is determined through various techniques, including flexion tests, hoof testers, feeling acupuncture points, and/or joint and nerve blocks. From here, further testing like x-rays and ultrasound can be done as needed to pinpoint the exact issue. The clinic is equipped with portable digital radiography for imaging, as well as an ultrasound machine to examine tendon injuries.
Joint Injections
Injecting joints help improve subclinical and clinical lameness as the result of wear and tear, performance, or injury. A lameness exam is done to identify the joint causing the pain, and steroids are injected directly into the joint along with an intra articular joint prep like hyaluronic acid.
